Onyxia’s Lair 60+ 40 man raid in Dustwallow Marsh
Arguably one of the most annoying, time consuming attunements in the game (at least until Karazhan was put in).
1) The initial quest is “Dragonkin Menace” given by Helendis Riverhorn at Morgan’s Vigil in the Burning Steppes. This just requires you to kill lots of low 50s level dragonkin of various names, some elite, some normal. They are all over the eastern side of the map of Burning Steppes.
2) Upon turning that in, you have to do some Fedex quests all named “The True Masters”: just go talk to people in various human settlements: first to Lakeshire, then to Stormwind Keep for two in a row, then back to Lakeshire, then back to Morgan’s Vigil. Easy but boring.
3) When you get back to Morgan’s Vigil, you get “Marshall Windsor”. First you have to find Ragged John in the northern Burning Steppes. Then you return to Morgan’s Vigil and are told to find Marshall Windsor in BRD. He is located in the prison cell block which is one of the first areas you are able to visit, so if you’re only going to talk to him, fortunately it doesn’t take too long.
4) Of course, upon returning, that seems to be the end of the chain. But now you have to go back to BRD, and start killing the dwarves. Eventually (the drop rate is actually pretty good) one will drop “A Crumpled Up Note” which allows you to continue the quest chain.
5) Once you have the note, talk to Windsor again. He’ll give you “A Shred of Hope” which requires that you kill General Angerforge and Golem Lord Argelmach for two quest items. They are located in BRD as well, but take a bit of time to get to.
6) Once you have the pieces of information from those two bosses, you can return to Marshall Windsor and get “Jail Break!”
7) The easiest thing to do for this quest is clear out the prison cell ring, and the arena ring (not the arena itself unless you want to get drops off the boss). Windsor, ever the hero, will have you unlock every prison door to find his gear and his friends rather than just running away. And of course, additional mobs spawn out of most of the doors, so you still have to fight. He does give the party a nice buff when he gets his gear which makes fighting a little easier. It’s important to note that you have to keep up with him and keep him alive to succeed though. His health resets after each fight, but if several mobs are beating on him, he goes down fairly quickly. So make them fight you rather than him.
8) After getting to the entrance to BRD, Windsor says he’ll meet you in Stormwind. So you go to the gates of SW and talk to Squire Rowe, who calls in Windsor. Then a lengthy and dramatic scene takes place where he’s welcomed back to SW as a hero, and parades slowly into SW Keep to confront the King and his “wife”. There you learn that the queen is actually Onyxia in disguise, and after she yells at Windsor and threatens everyone, she flies off. In her place all the guards in the room turn into elite dragonkin, which Windsor and the King fight off. You can help, as can anyone who’s around, but the King can handle himself just fine, so if you’d rather stand back and watch fine. Just don’t get killed so you can accept the next quest when the battle is over.
9) Next you get a Fragment of the Dragon’s Eye, and are literally just told to “find someone who knows about it”. I don’t know how the first people who discovered this did so, but that’s why this guide is here. You are looking for Haleh in Winterspring. To get to her, you have to run through a cave full of elite and nonelite dragonkin. If you’re completing this as a 70, they are not an issue, but any earlier it’s a problem. The easiest thing to do (time consuming again) if you’re not in a group is just run naked through the cave and corpse walk to the back. In the rear of the cave there is a blue rune on the ground which, when you stand on it, teleports you high onto a mountain standing next to Haleh.
10) She gives you “Blood of the Black Dragonflight” which will send you to Upper Blackrock Spire to defeat General Drakkisath, the final boss. There’s no way around this; it involves a full UBRS run, but in a ten man group with some high levels, it doesn’t take too long. Drakkisath drops a quest item, and now you have to return to Haleh using any of the aforementioned methods.
11) When you return and hand in the quest, you get the Drakefire Amulet, which, so long as you have it in your inventory (not necessarily equipped), allows you to enter Onyxia’s Lair.
