Heroics, 70+, 5 man instances
All non-raid instances in Outland, as well as the Caverns of Time in Tanaris, have heroic mode. The mobs and bosses have more hit points, hit harder, and in some cases have new abilities (particularly bosses, but some mobs are immune to various CC or gain other abilities)
But, the boss loot tables are different. They drop epic bop gems, other epic gear, and Badges of Justice, which can be used in Shattrath City to purchase OTHER epic items from a vendor in the center of the city.
The other thing to note about heroics is they have reset timers: you can only run each one every 24 hours. So when you start, be sure the group is competent and wants to finish, or else you’ll have to wait a day to try again.
Heroic keys can be bought for 9 gold each from the vendors of associated factions. The keys become available when you reach Revered reputation (for now, in a future patch they will reportedly be available at Honored reputation). So, laid out below are the factions associated with each instance, and how to get more faction reputation.
Honor Hold: linked to Ramparts, Blood Furnace, and Shattered Halls.
Until Honored, you get reputation from kills in Ramparts and Blood Furnace. From Honored to Revered, you get reputation only in Shattered Halls. Quests in Hellfire Pennisula which grant HH rep give the rep at any time.
Cenarion Expedition: linked to Slave Pens, Underbog, and Steamvaults.
Until Honored you get reputation from kills in Slave Pens and Underbog. From Honored to Revered, you get reputation only in Steamvaults. Quests in Zangarmarsh which grant CE rep give rep at any time. Further, there is a repeatable quest for turning in Unidentified Plant Parts. You can turn those in until you hit Friendly. Un ID’ed Parts are available from mobs in Zangarmarsh as well as on the AH.
Lower City: linked to Mana Tombs, Auchenai Crypts, and Shadow Labs.
Until Honored you get reputation from kills in Mana Tombs and Auchenai Crypts. From Honored to Revered, you get reputation only in Shadow Labs. Quests both in Shattrath City and some in Terrokar Forest give you LC rep at any time. There is a repeatable quest in Shattrath City for Arrakoa Feathers. You can turn those in until you hit Friendly. The feathers drop off any birdmen in Terrokar Forest, or you can buy them on the AH.
Keepers of Time: linked to Durnholde Keep and Black Morass (Dark Portal)
Because there are so few KoT quests, you get rep from kills in both instances all the way to exalted. This is truly a grind, but the quests linked to the instances are worth something like 3000 and 8800 rep with the KoT, so it does go relatively quickly. But to hit Revered, this one is a straight up instance grind for the most part.
Those are the only heroic keys currently available. To maximize your acquisition of reputation and make it as easy to get the keys as fast as possible, here’s the recommended strategy:
1) If there is a repeatable quest for the faction as noted above (LC and CE) do that until you can’t anymore. For the LC one, you get a goody bag which generally contains a low 60s green belt, a scroll of some sort, and a potion or two. There are also boe blues on occasion, so the payoff is relatively good for this one. For CE, you also get a bag with herbs in it, and occasionally you get a “new plant specimen” which can be turned in for additional rep. So both repeatables are worth doing until you can’t do them at all any more.
2) Before doing ANY other quests in each new zone, start running the instances until you hit Honored reputation. So as soon as you get to Outland at 58+, start running Ramps and BF. With higher guild members this is a breeze.
3) After hitting Honored, do ALL the quests in the zone to gain as much rep as possible into Revered. This will limit the number of actually difficult runs in higher end instances you have to do. You’ll still have to do one or two, but without such preparation, you would have to do upwards of 10-12.
This strategy is a bit boring, but you will get instance gear early on, and gain most of your levels in instances. So as you progress from zone to zone, when you get around to doing the quests for rep, you’ll be able to solo them all very easily.
